This NZTA project was let as an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contract to McConnell Dowell who engaged URS as the lead designer. The project involved replacement of the historic timber truss bridges linking the town of Kurow to Hakataramea across the river. Both bridges, one 90m and the other 210m long, were constructed as a weathering steel ladder girder bridge with a composite concrete deck. Piers comprised single large diameter piles with reinforced concrete cross heads. Significant river training works and scour protection was included in the project.

The project received incredible community support, this culminated in an opening day combined with a local fair that was well supported by the communities from both sides of the river along with NZTA, McConnell Dowell and the design team.
