NORTHERN GATEWAY TOLL ROAD, AUCKLAND
Client: New Zealand Transport Agency
Completion Date: January 2009
Team:
The Northern Gateway Toll Road was designed and constructed by the Northern Gateway Alliance, which included URS. This is a 7.5km stretch of four-lane motorway linking Orewa to Puhoi. The steep terrain and sensitive ecology along the route posed a very challenging environment to construct the new motorway.
These challenges were addressed by the close collaboration between the NZTA, designers, constructors and regulatory authorities to arrive at optimal solutions that addressed these challenges. The success of this collaboration and the resulting motorway development was recognised in the national awards for the project.
Peter led the bridge design team and provided technical guidance for the six major bridges on the project. This included the architectural award winning Hillcrest Road Bridge (the Pukeko Bridge) and Waiwera Viaducts, twin 575m long prestressed concrete box girders. Noel designed the motorway alignment and optimised the road layout and safety features to produce one of the safest sections of motorway in New Zealand.
